I don’t know about you but I am always getting confused by all of the tidbits of information that I have to remember. Modern technology has its drawbacks. Now that I have used SharePoint for many months, one of the things that I found that I was always forgetting was port# used by Central Admin. It can be in any range between like 2000 and 64000 – and every installation picks a different random number. I was forever having to term serve onto a new box and use Central Admin from the Start menu because the port# changes and I could not remember it.
What a waste of time! Finally I just gave up. Now when I do a SharePoint installation I always change the Central Admin port# (I never take the default random number) and the value I’ve chosen is 55000. This makes it easy to remotely access Central Admin on any machine . . . all I do is reference it by: “http://<server>:55000/” and I get to the default Central Admin page. This tip isn’t fancy – but it has saved me lots of time and I only have to remember one thing (55000).
Now if I could only remember where I left my keys!
