Recently I was making a pass through my old emails and I noticed that several folks have been asking me about PowerPivot and Windows 7. As you know – and I hope that everyone knows – PowerPivot is *NOT* supported on Windows 7. We have very specific prerequisite requirements – and running on a Windows Server OS is one of our requirements. However, from time to time, customers ask about using Windows 7 (even if it is not supported). I went back in my old files and I found this very interesting posting from Stacia Misner who explained her experiences.

I don’t know how long Stacia ran with Windows 7; nor how much of PowerPivot and SharePoint worked (all or just some). In either case, I thought the general community might be interested in her experiences.

Thanks for calling out my post, Dave!
For the record, I’m still running everything successfully on my Windows 7 laptop. I will say I’m having issues with the dashboard, but I haven’t had the time to dig in and diagnose it. I haven’t tried to do data refresh yet either. My primary interest to date has been to work with the workbooks in the PowerPivot Gallery and that is all behaving as it should. I can view the reports in SharePoint and build linked reports successfully.
Pardon a silly question, but are you talking about PowerPivot for Excel 2010? And this is not supported in Windows 7?
Great question George.
No, I was speaking about PowerPivot for SharePoint.
PowerPivot for Excel (the Excel add-in) *is* supported on all client OS’ from Windows XP (i.e. XP, Vista and Windows 7). It is also supported on server OS’ for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
Hi
I have been using Power pivot with my Windows 7 and excel 2010 as a stand alone system. I am using the access database for my work. The import to the power pivot of the access data happens successfully. I can draw a pivot from the data imported, but when I try to use the tool to draw a chart “A new sheet is created saying “Data for Chart1″ and pivot data is created but the chart is not created. This happens for all the options except pivot table option
Has anyone been able to install any version of PowerPivot on Windows 7 64bit desktop.
Kevin: Sure I do it all of the time. Make sure that your bitness matches Excel desktop (32bit for 32bit and 64bit for 64bit) and ensure you have the matching VSTO as well.
