If you are running the November 2009 CTP version of the PowerPivot for Excel 2010 add-in, your add-in expired on April 1st. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

The SQL Server team will re-release the November 2009 CTP version of the PowerPivot for Excel 2010 add-in with an extended expiration date very soon. We will post an availability announcement with the download location and installation instructions on the PowerPivot blogs and forums as soon as possible.

An update (April 7, 2010 14:19 PST) – fix has been released!

On a personal note, I’d like to express my own apology. Clearly we miscalculated the time bomb date and did not provide an adequate adjustment period for our customers. This is totally and completely our fault.

For those of you running PowerPivot for SharePoint on the server, there is no impact from this client-side time bomb – rest easy on that account.

LATE BREAKING NEWS: This appears to be an Office 2010 beta issue. Rumor has it (I will confirm later) that VSTO will be installed along with an Excel 2010-only install when Office ships next year. But it does impact us today. Sorry. The latest, late breaking news is that VSTO will continue to be installed with “Office Shared Tools”. You must select it along with Excel 2010 when you install. We have modified the PowerPivot for Excel installation to verify this, but you must still do it. Sorry to raise your hopes.

A recent issue has come up that us geeks might find interesting. To minimize their expose to Office 2010, some folks are installing just the Excel 2010 app itself. On the surface that sounds like a good idea – only install what you need and don’t add bloatware if it isn’t needed (isn’t that the definition of bloatware? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloatware ).

The problem is that the PowerPivot Excel add in is written mainly in managed code. And the way managed code interfaces with Excel is through, you guessed it, VSTO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_Studio_Tools_for_Office). Unfortunately VSTO is only installed if you select the “Office Shared Tools” option as part of your installation, or if you did a “Complete” installation like I always do. See this posting from Ron Pihlgren (a Test lead here in PowerPivot-land) http://blogs.msdn.com/ronpih/archive/2009/11/18/office-14-beta-2-powerpivot-for-excel-ctp3-you-must-install-office-shared-tools.aspx for more info.

SQL Server 2008 R2 released to the web today for TechNet and MSDN subscribers. According to the announcement, non-subscribers will be able to access the download Wednesday, November 11th. To install PowerPivot for SharePoint you will need SharePoint 2010 beta (being released next week or the week after). For the matching PowerPivot for Excel CTP3, you need Office 2010 being released at the same time as SharePoint. Sorry I am not high enough on the food chain to have the exact date – but I do know that it is proceeding on its normal release and sign-off cycle. So get your R2 bits downloaded early and hit the ground running once the SharePoint and Office 2010 betas release.

See here (http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/R2Downloads.aspx) for the R2 announcement.

Do you travel with your laptop? Are you running Windows Server 2008 (or R2) on it? Is it a 64-bit OS? Does it have enough memory to run a VM of the PowerPivot server components? (4GB will just do it, but 8GB is better – with 6GB reserved to the SharePoint image) Are you running SharePoint 2010 and PowerPivot on it?

If the answer to all of these questions is YES (and there is an amazing number of people who do use their laptops like this), then read on. If you don’t then, still read on if you are a geek. If you try to take your laptop off the network (i.e. in a plane at 20,000 ft), then you will run into an issue around the construction of a valid Windows token. You will get the following error:

Just before Excel Services calls PowerPivot (at the OLEDB provider level), it attempts to translate its claims token to a Windows token for establishing a “Windows environment” for PowerPivot. With CTP3, this translation requires access to the domain controller for where the account lies – and obviously that is not available as you are disconnected from the network. Ultimately the system should use cached credentials if they are available, but that does not happen in CTP3. To solve the problem, we can either: (1) install a local domain controller on the machine – this is surprising easy but a bit of an overkill for this situation. An alternate approach is to setup Excel Services (and some of the PowerPivot components) to use the unattended execution account (aka, the “NONE” authorization setting for the connection in Excel). In the rest of this posting, I’ll talk about how to do that.

(Sorry about the quality of the screenshots. This wasn’t originally developed for my blog)

Steps to follow:

0 — Get your machine up and running on your home domains

1 — Do regular NEW FARM installation on the machine. Give the same account for both the farm administrator and the SQL services, i.e. click on "Use a single account . . ."

2 — Ensure everything is running correctly.

3 — Go into the Excel Services service application and change the Unattended Account to be "PowerPivotUnattendedAccount" (created as part of a NEW FARM installation)

Run Central Administration and click on "Manage service applications"

Click on "ExcelServiceApp1" and then on "Global Settings"

At the bottom of the page, in the section titled "External Data", fill in PowerPivotUnattendedAccount" as the unattended service account

4 — You must set all PowerPivot workbooks to use "NONE" as their Excel Services authentication technique. THIS MEANS ALL OF YOUR DEMO WORKBOOKS.

Here is how to do it:

a — In Excel desktop, go to the Data ribbon and click on "Connections"

b — Select the ‘Sandbox’ data connection (likely this will be your only connection) and click on Properties…

c — Go to the Definition tab and at the bottom click on "Authentication Settings…"

d — Select "None" and then OK, then OK, and Close.

e — Save the workbook.
